Maverick (1994)
Directed by Richard Donner, “Maverick” (1994) is a delightful comedy western that deserves more recognition. Starring Mel Gibson as Bret Maverick, the film follows his quest for money to enter a high-stakes poker tournament. Along the way, Maverick encounters a series of comic mishaps and challenges, including a charming female thief played by Jodie Foster.
The film boasts a sharp script with brilliantly timed humor, and the chemistry between the leads—Gibson, Foster, and the legendary James Garner—is a joy to watch. The stellar ensemble cast includes Graham Greene, Alfred Molina, James Coburn, Dub Taylor, Max Perlich, Paul L. Smith, Geoffrey Lewis, and Dan Hedaya, all contributing to the film’s entertaining appeal.
Randy Newman’s score adds an extra layer of charm to this mid-90s gem. Despite its underrated status, possibly due to its runtime, “Maverick” never has a dull moment and showcases Richard Donner’s talent for creating fun and engaging movies.
