THE CONVERT | Official Trailer |

In the rugged landscapes of early 19th century New Zealand, amidst the turbulent clash of cultures, Thomas Munro, a devout lay preacher, found himself stationed at the remote British settlement of Epworth. The settlement stood as a fragile outpost amidst the vast wilderness, where tensions simmered between the European settlers and the indigenous Māori tribes.

Thomas Munro, portrayed with intensity by Guy Pearce, was a man of unwavering faith and conviction. His arrival in Epworth was met with a mix of curiosity and suspicion by both settlers and Māori alike. Despite the challenges of the unfamiliar terrain and the constant threat of conflict, Munro remained steadfast in his mission to spread the word of God and bring peace to the troubled land.

Te Kohe Tuhaka’s character, a fierce Māori warrior whose name resonated through the valleys, stood as a stark contrast to Munro’s beliefs. Their encounters were marked by a mutual wariness, but also a deep-seated respect born from their shared determination to protect their people and ways of life.

As tensions escalated and skirmishes erupted between rival Māori tribes, Munro found himself drawn deeper into the heart of the conflict. His faith was tested not only by the violence that surrounded him but also by the moral dilemmas he faced in a land where cultural boundaries blurred and alliances shifted like the restless winds.

Directed with gripping intensity by Lee Tamahori, “The Convert” delved into themes of faith, cultural collision, and the resilience of the human spirit. Shane Danielsen and Tamahori’s screenplay, crafted from Michael Bennett’s compelling story, painted a vivid portrait of a tumultuous era in New Zealand’s history, where individuals were forced to confront their deepest convictions amidst the chaos of war.

Through breathtaking cinematography and powerful performances, “The Convert” unfolded as a poignant exploration of the bonds that unite and divide us, and the sacrifices demanded by the pursuit of peace and understanding in a world torn apart by conflicting aspirations.
