Redbad (2018)

Redbad (2018) is a gripping historical action drama set in the early Middle Ages. The story revolves around Redbad (Gijs Naber), a Frisian warrior who begins to question the pagan traditions of his people, the Frisians—known as “the free folk.” Tensions arise when his beloved, Fenne, is chosen for a sacrificial ritual, leading to a conflict with his father. During the ritual, the Franks launch a surprise attack, resulting in the fall of the Frisian town of Dorestad. Amid the chaos, Redbad’s uncle Eibert seizes power and blames Redbad for the defeat and the death of his father, ultimately condemning him to die by setting him adrift at sea.

Miraculously surviving the ordeal, Redbad washes ashore in Viking territory, where he learns to appreciate the strength of his own culture. Gradually accepted into the Viking clan, he proves his worth in battle and marries the daughter of King Wiglek. Upon returning to Dorestad, Redbad is horrified to find his sister has been married off to the son of the Frankish King Pepin of Herstal. Worse, a priest named Willibrord publicly humiliates her by forcing her to convert to Christianity. Redbad vows to liberate her, but to challenge the mighty Franks, he must unite his people and build an army capable of overthrowing their powerful enemies.

Filled with intense battle sequences, political intrigue, and a quest for freedom, Redbad offers a thrilling look at the clash between pagan and Christian worlds during a turbulent period in European history.
