The Ritual (2017)

The Ritual (2017), directed by David Bruckner, is a standout in the folk horror genre that offers a fresh take on the genre with its unique creature design and atmospheric tension. The film centers on four college friends who, grieving the loss of a friend, embark on a hike through the Scandinavian wilderness. Their journey takes a dark turn when they venture into a forest steeped in Norse legend, where they encounter an ancient and malevolent force.

David Bruckner’s direction creates a palpable sense of dread, effectively using the eerie and isolated setting (filmed in Romania, standing in for Sweden) to enhance the horror elements. The film’s standout feature is its creature, Modor, designed by concept artist Keith Thompson. Modor is a hauntingly original entity, resembling a giant stag with two pairs of human arms, a headless human torso, and massive antlers. The creature’s unsettling and distinctive appearance is a visual highlight of the film.

The Ritual balances psychological tension with supernatural horror, making it a memorable and unsettling experience for fans of the genre. Its success led Bruckner to direct the Hellraiser (2022) reboot, further establishing his reputation in the horror field.
